FAQ: Internet & Phone

  by: Alan Spencer

What’s the main reason?

Money, of course! Internet & phone is a convenient package that offers a phone connection and an ADSL connection to get online. Instead of paying two bills (one to use your phone line and another one to log on to the web) you just pay one bill for the two facilities. In other words: major discount!

Does the bill stay the same?

Yes it does. With internet&phone you can make phone calls and surf the web for a permanent amount of money each on a monthly basis. So basically you don’t depend on the way you use both facilities, you can use them as much as you like! The price will stay the same. Just choose the subscription that suits you best and you’ll never pay for on overpriced connection again.

Do I save money?

Because it’s a package of two things instead of two different bills, you most certainly do! With internet&phone you can choose between three kinds of subscribtions: Basic, Extra and Premium. The difference lies in the speed of the internet your prefer (upload and download speed). Another choice is the one for your phone, between CallUnlimited Weekends and NIghts of CallUnlimited Always. Unlimited means a permanent amount of money, so no nasty surprises at the end of the month.

What if others use their phone more than I do?

There’s an easy, fair solution. To make sure everyone can benefit from the advantages of internet&phone, there’s a so called Fair Use Policy. This means that payment is calculated by taking the average use of ‘normal’ customers. There’s no limit to your subscription, but if you overtake the average use extremely, you will be contacted. No fines of course, just checking in to see if maybe you’d like a different subscription.

What are the extra perks?

The combination package of internet&phone offers a lot of free, cool stuff. For example:

- full internet service (Basic, Extra and Premium)

- 5 email boxes (30MB each) with 5 aliases

- free Firewall, spam filter and virus scan

- personal homepage (50 MB of hard disk)

- full phone service

Can I get more numbers?

Yes, you can. With internet & phone there’s the option to get extra phone numbers instead of just one. Orders as many as you like, though it’s only possible to use two at the same time. Cool thing though, because you don’t have to wait for others to hang up.

Is it difficult to install?

Not so much! You’ll get everything you need to install internet&phone for free. And by this we mean the box and installation packet. Do it yourself and save a lot of money! If you need someone to install everything for you, you’re bound to make costs.

Any skeletons?

Skeletons not so much, but be aware of the fact that you can no longer use other providers after installing internet&phone. Changing providers means a fine. Your subscription lasts one year and will be silently extended, so make sure you write down when it’s time to check if you want to change things around. Analogue connections will do, no need to go digital for your phone connection. Your laptop of computer needs at least Windows 2000, so there’s a major chance you’ll have the right equipment to get internet&phone!

So, it’s cool and convenient because….?

- One provider for two services

- one bill, less costs

- keep your own number

- add new numbers

- wireless modem prepared for the future

- cheap calls abroad! Save up to 50% compared to other ways

FAQ: Interactive TV

  by: Alan Spencer

Is the quality better?

Without a doubt! Interactive tv is a form of digital tv and that means nothing more than razor sharp images and lots of eye for detail. A regular tv is analogue and that results in static. The images are granular and that won’t happen with interactive tv.

Do I get a say in what I watch?

As a matter of fact, you get to choose everything yourself. With a regular tv you’re forced to turn to your tv guide. This isn’t the case with interactive tv. You can choose whatever you want to watch, whenever you want to watch it. It’s no problem is you’ve missed something you’d wanted to watch, because you can tape the stuff you want to see! Another advantage is that you can skip those annoying, long commercial breaks. This of course, is impossible with a normal tv.

Is it true I get more channels?

You sure do. Digital or interactive tv means a lot more channels than you get on your regular tv. Lots of foreign channels, but also theme channels about travelling, cooking, cars… basically any subject has its own channel! Of course sports and films have their own channels too, but you’ll have to pay extra for those.

What’s that, no more commercials?

Sounds good, doesn’t it? It is! Because you can fast-forward through movies and programs, you no longer need to endure those endless annoying commercial breaks. Toilet paper, tampons, shampoo…from now on they’re only in your own bathroom, not on tv!

So, I control what I’m watching?

Abso-freaking-lutely! You’re the one who’s in control with interactive tv. Walk the dog while your watching? Just pause it! Interrupting airings is possible when you feel like it and you can resume watching. when it suits you. You no longer need to miss parts of the programs you were watching. Just pause and continue, whenever you’re ready.

What if I miss something I wanted to watch?

Just watch it anyway! If you’ve got interactive tv, you can tape the things you’ll want to watch at another time. And you can also watch everything you’ve missed today or yesterday with Missed Airings. The whole grid of the three main channels is available, but you can rewatch other channels too. Just adjust your subscription.

Can I watch movies?

Even better, you can bring home the video store! With one push of the button you’ll enter a long lists of movies you can watch. Apart from those there are also lots of tv series available. Just sit back and watch whatever you want without having to leave the house on a rainy day.

Why is it called interactive?

One of the reasons is the fact that with interactive tv you can actually be part of what’s on the tube. Give the answers in a game show, guess the questions during a test; just use the remote control to vote or to select your answer.

Is it hard to get?

Of course not. Though it might sound complicated, it really isn’t. Just install the box and you’re good to go!

The Difference Between ADSL & Cable

 by: Alan Spencer

Through the phone line

Although most people don’t even use their home phone anymore (cell phone, anyone?), the line that makes that connection is the main difference between ADSL and cable internet. ADSL enters your house through that line, while cable comes in via a datanetwork your cable company provides. Both connections are broadband.

So?

Cable goes through a network and that means you actually share the available connection with other people. And if those people like to download you’ll soon notice that the speed of your internet connection decreases. How ‘bout that! You’re paying for stuff that’s not even yours alone! ADSL on the other hand is just for you so there’s no sharing with the rest of the ‘hood. Be aware though: cable is not guranteed to be slower than ADSL! It can actually be faster…

Tech talk: ADSL

Without getting too technical, you might want to know ho wit works backstage. ADSL comes in through a analogue or digital phone line. This means the availability is very high. But there’s a big flaw in the whole ADSL game. If you don’t live close enough to the power station, the speed of your internet goes down rapidly. Bandwidth always stays the same, but quality (speed) might decrease. It might happen, it’s not guarenteed to happen!

Tech talk: cable

Cable is commonly described as a possibility to reach a high maximum download speed. But again, you share this with other people so you might end up paying for a service that doesn’t really live up to its prize…

One or more providers

Another factor is that within most cable networks usually one provider rules the line. For real, you can’t choose another company. ADSL however is on your own phone line and you can see for yourself who holds that line. That’s the law, to be exact. But the signal goes down if you’re too far from the power station, the maximum distance is said to be 4 km and basically that’s nothing.

So what’s the best choice?

First of all it’s wise to look around so you can see what everyone has to offer. The choice isn’t really that big of a deal, as you as you can go on the internet. But what are the perks? The providers want new customers so they’re bound to have discounts and other win-win options. And your bank account wins too! The speed of you connection is just one of few things you need to pay attention to. Some providers let you customize your subscription after sealing the deal. It’s important you get to have a say in things, as you don’t want to get stuck in a deal that doesn’t result in what’s best for you.

Compare gifts

While browsing around for internet subscriptions, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the extras the providers are, well, providing. A free phone for example, or tv on demand (internet tv). And think about how you want to use your internet. Are your main activities surfing and emailing? You will definitely not need a fast and expensive connection. But if you’re ready to download all those movies you still haven’t seen, you want to invest in the speed of your internet connection.

Conclusion?

You don’t share ADSL, but if you’re located too far from the power sation, this might have an influence on the speed of your internet. You do share cable with other people, and this might have an influence on your connection speed as well… whatever you choose, it’s a matter of trying and see for yourself. No matter how many neighbours you have, you’ll still be able to download stuff. Also when you’ve got ADSL!

Benefits of a Computer Hard Drive Forensic Examination

  by: Ed Opperman

Computer forensic examinations have become a widely known form of investigation that is performed by expert private investigators simply because of the large amount of evidence that they can provide for many different types of troublesome situations.

A situation where a partner is cheating in a relationship or marriage is one of the most common reasons for this type of investigation that generally comes to the minds of many people that first hear about a computer forensic examination. Although the evidence that experts are able to obtain with this service when infidelity is occurring in a relationship has provided many people with the answers they were looking for, there are also other situations and benefits of having a computer forensic examination performed. To list a few of these would include situations where employee misuse of company computers is suspected by the employer of a business, when problems of addiction to porn is suspected to be occurring in a relationship, and many different areas of misbehavior that could end up as very serious problems that are suspected by a teen's parents. In some cases teen runaways have even been located because of the helpful information that was obtained during the performance of the investigation. The benefits that individuals and families receive from a computer forensic investigation can literally be priceless when the result is saving a child or teenager from tragedies that have been known to occur because of activity on the Internet.

One of the reasons that computer forensic examinations have become such a well-known and popular tool for many people is because of the different types of data that can be recovered from the hard drive of computers that a person suspects to hold evidence that they are looking for. Not only can these investigations recover emails that have been previously deleted, but they can also uncover deleted information that is contained in deleted files and documents, instant messages from AOL, MSN, Yahoo and other messenger chat logs, and even photographs and graphics that have been deleted.

When these different forms of evidence have been recovered from a computer's hard drive with a computer forensic examination, it gives employers, parents, partners, husbands and wives the proof they need to confront many different types of situations. It also gives them the opportunity to do whatever they deem necessary to either get specific problems completely eliminated or at least under control.

Cool Combination: Internet And TV

  by: Alan Spencer

Households without internet and a television set are hard to find. How about the advantages of a combination of the two? Try internet and tv.

It sounds logical to combine internet and tv. Let’s face it, everyone has internet and very few people don’t own a tv. But it’s not so clear for many what exactly the combination of internet and tv really is. Let alone how you can get it and what it takes to install it. It really isn’t that complicated. Promised!

What are the advantages?

Internet and tv is nothing more than a combination of the two in one package. With a lot of cool perks! For example, you’ll get to know the superb sensation that is digital tv. It’s possible to choose the channels you want to watch. Less costs. But you do need to make sure you’ve got a decent (or at least the one that suits you best) internet connection.

Can I select the channels myself?

No and yes. With internet and tv you can dedide which channels you want to watch. But they come in packages (choose between two) so you won’t be able to pick out the channels one by one. There’s two packages to choose from; a standard package and a premium package. The standard package contains all the channels you’ve got on your tv right now. The premium package extends the channel offer. Pick for example Eredivisie Live (all the Dutch football games live on tv) a theme channel (travel, cooking) or HD TV. With HD TV you’ll watch tv in a whole new way. Thanks to a higher resolution the colors are brighter, the sounds are better (depends a bit on your stereo though) and everything is sharper.

What do I need for internet and tv?

One of the most important ingredients has got to be a phone line. Not even a connection to that line (so you don’t need a phone at home) but just the line itself. It should be hidden in your house somewhere, just look for a little box. Then of course, you’ll need an internet connection. But you definitely don’t need to get the fastest, most expensive connection. That depends on what you do online.

Which internet connection should I choose?

There are severel internet connections to choose from. Make sure you get the right one, in other words the one that isn’t overprized. For internet and tv you don’t necessarily need an expensive, rapid connection. Just think about how you use your internet. Are you online to look up stuff and to send emails? Then the standard connection will do. But are you one of those downloading freaks with several computers at home (several people using the same connection) you should opt for the connection with high download speed.

What about the installation?

It’s possible to install internet and tv yourself. The user guide is clear and convenient and with a bit of knowledge you should be able to fix things yourself. However, there are always adjusters available if you do need any help. Try it yourself first though! You don’t want to pay a guy that fixes things you easily could’ve done yourself.

Clash of the Titans: Interactive TV vs Regular TV

 by: Alan Spencer

Quality on screen

Interactive tv is a form of digital tv and that means nothing more than razor sharp images and lots of eye for detail. A regular tv is analogue and that results in static. The images are granular and that won’t happen with interactive tv.

Amount of channels

Digital or interactive tv means a lot more channels than you get on your regular tv. Lots of foreign channels, but also theme channels about travelling, cooking, cars… basically any subject has its own channel! Of course sports and films have their own channels too, but you’ll have to pay extra for those.

Making decisions

With a regular tv you’re forced to turn to your tv guide. This isn’t the case with interactive tv. You can choose whatever you want to watch, whenever you want to watch it. It’s no problem is you’ve missed something you’d wanted to watch, because you can tape the stuff you want to see! Another advantage is that you can fast forward those annoying, long commercial breaks. This of course, is impossible with a normal tv.

A box

A normal tv you just switch on and you can watch tv. Or flick through channels because that’s why you’ve got that remote control. It’s not as simple with digital/interactive tv. You’ll need to install a box that receives digital tv. Plug it in with the scart cable and then just kick back and relax while flicking through a whole mother load of extra channels. If you want to be able to tape things, get yourself a hard disk recorderd. When you decide to get ITV, you usually get the choice anyway: a tv-receiver or a tv-receiver with hard disk recorder. Of course it’s possible to tape stuff with a normal tv as well. Use the almost extinct videorecorder or the more modern dvd recorder.

Interactive participation

With ITV you can actually participate in programs. With regular tv you just grab a pen and write down answers during a quiz or test, with interactive tv you use the remote control to push buttons to vote and pick answers while watching.

Home cinema

Of course you can just as easily hire a dvd or watch a movies at home with your regular tv set. With interactive tv however, you’ll bring home the cinema. Or more like the video shop, because with one push of the button you’ll enter a long lists of movies you can watch. Apart from those there are also lots of tv series available. Just sit back and watch whatever you want without having to leave the house on a rainy day.

Watch missed shows

With a regular tv you have to wait for the rerun if you’ve missed a program you wanted to see. And waiting sucks, especially if they air the rerun at a ridiculous time at night or in the morning right in the middle of the week. If you’ve got interactive tv, you can watch everything you’ve missed today or yesterday with Missed Airings. The whole grid of the three main channels is available, but you can rewatch other channels too. Just adjust your subscription.
